Title: New Antenna
Post by: Nigel on November 21, 2017, 10:53:13 PM
I am considering buying a new antenna and have been looking at the BS-1105 Kit AS - Base Antenna 1090 mhz (Panorama) available from Amazon:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Panorama-Base-Antenna-BS-1105-1090/dp/B01N9YXCR6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1511304469&sr=8-1&keywords=BS-1105+Kit+AS+-+Base+Antenna+1090+mhz+%28Panorama%29

If anyone has one of these I would welcome your thoughts on the antenna before taking the plunge i.e. are they suitable for installation externally on a pole etc. ?

Many thanks

Nigel

Panorama make good antennae.

But you could save yourself GBP £36.00 by getting a FlightAware external antenna from ModMyPi on Amazon for GBP £53.99.

I have one of these and it works just fine on an external mast:

I originally used a BS1105 ADS-B antenna and was happy with its performance but unfortunately the sun got the better of it and caused the plastic wing nuts to become brittle and broke.  :o

Then tried the FlightAware stick which also performed well but I wanted more so I bought a DPD Productions antenna -

and very happy with its coverage. So if price is not a worry, check out the specifications.

Now use the smaller FlightAware antenna when I'm out and about with the laptop, so it very handy in that situation.

Why do you want a new one?  And where will you place it?  In the same location as the old one?

I have FlightAware, Wimo and Jetvision antennae.  They all perform the same.  Height, small cable run, good connectors and a place free from obstacles is most important.

Yeah the same location. same cable.  i want to only change the antenna ;)
a great to hear that the 3 antennas performs the same ..

i cant change the position of the antenna..   thats why i want to change the antenna itself.

at moment i use  flightareware pro stick with an 1090MHz ADS-B Filtered Preamp uputronics  and  2m rg 316 cable to the antenna.
i cant use a better cable because its forbidden to dril any holes here...

What I'm suggesting is a different antenna may not get you more range.

Everyone will claim their antenna is the best.  Do you have a polar chart showing your current range and how does it compare to using Heywhatsthat?

http://www.heywhatsthat.com/

Use this to see what visual range you can get from your location.

Great.  Personally, I'd be happy with that coverage and wouldn't expect a new antenna to make much difference.

I've had the Wimo antenna since 2005 with a masthead pre-amp and it's still working great.  The Jetvision antenna performs just as good.

We don't need 978MHz here in Europe.  I can't comment on the DPD except it's expensive!
