Title: Hi there
Post by: Taubin on January 02, 2019, 04:16:22 AM
Hello from New Zealand!

Over the Christmas break, I helped my father in law set up his sdr flight tracker. It was something I have dabbled in in the past, but lucky for me, he's an electrical engineer who has retired from the air force here. He used to do comms as an officer, and is incredibly smart.

We built a 1090 antenna, which he gave me to take home. It's now up and running and I've been setting up software. Thank you for having me, I'm sure I'll have questions in the future. Cheers!

Welcome and thanks for the introduction.

Out of interest, what SDR do you use and what software to display the local flights?

Thanks!

I'm using a FlightAware Pro stick, with the homemade antenna. For software I'm using dump1090-fa on a raspberry pi, feeding the data to about every source I've been able to find. Locally I'm using modesmix and VRS. It's been quite fun to set up!

I've just purchased a third pi (can never have too many), and the RTL-SDR dongle to play with pulling NOAA images and other bits. It's been a blast so far
