Pilot did the correct thing.
I have always had it explained from day 1 of holding a pilot licence. Do your checks on the ground, because there is no layby in the sky. If engine stops for whatever reason, get on the ground fast.

We were always taught to find a suitable spot ahead of the aircraft, check the wind direction and hope for a safe landing.  And avoid fields of corn or stubble!
