The RAF colours have come down for the last time at Kinloss, as the Moray airfield was handed over to the army.

The 39 Engineer Regiment has taken over the base, ending its 73-year association with the air force.

A small private ceremony was organised to mark the transition to Kinloss Barracks.

The engineer regiment has been based at Waterbeach near Cambridge. By October, 716 personnel will have moved to Kinloss.

The army unit's move to Moray has been welcomed in the area.

It faced serious economic losses because of the reduction in the RAF's presence.

When the decision was announced Jim Royan, chairman of the Moray Economic Partnership, said: "The RAF has been at the heart of our Kinloss community for 70 years and we wish those who are leaving the very best.

"But we are delighted to welcome the men and women of 39 Engineers who are coming to Moray and they will find a warm welcome at their new home."

Another one bites the dust. I wonder if the army will use it for helicopter flying

Very sad, I had 5 very happy years at kinloss 98-03 and i have to say they were the best 5 years of my RAF career!

With Cottesmore going a few years back there is only Marham left of bases i have been posted to now!

Andy, same for me with RAFG gone aswell. Where you on a SQN at Marham ? Good old days for me when 27 still had Tonkas ! TTTE was a blast though, down the bowl most nights and the thursday bop. Oakham, Stamford, Leicester and Nottingham also great nights out. Those were the days. I guess most people now get their pleasure from having internet in the block. I would imagine newer guys can't comprehend what it was like before the advent of mobile phones, internet and mixed accomodation ! Trying to sneek a local civvie girl out of the block when the next one was RAFP accomodation was always a good covert mission on a friday morning. Especially if they had called a Station exercise which always seemed to be on a friday morning at Cottesmore.
