I now have the SBS-3 and what a difference it has made. I have a pretty good Radar.txt file up and running, and hope to improve it further when I relocate the SBS-3 and therefore shorten the Antenna cable run. Here are the figures I am having success with....

;Beamfinder

;Javornik
SI 28   48.26023    17.16317 15.171

;Mont Ventaux
SI 21   44.17373    5.27791  14.797

;Beamfinder Plus S

;Ingolstadt-Manching
ZS 0.009009   48.714504   11.53411 12.000

;Laupheim
ZS 0.009036   48.21843    9.90974 12.000

;Beamfinder Plus (Mode-A/C)

; Salzburg
ZZ 0.006666   47.91814    13.00467 15.345

;Schwabisch-Hall-Weckrieden
ZZ 0.011907   49.11630    9.77677 6.024

Dissapointingly, the once reliable II08 at Linz seems to now be a problem. I would imagine another radarhead nearby is using the same code now. The only concern that I have is when I shorten the Antenna cable (could be by as much as 70%) maybe I will induce more problems by bringing other duplicated Radarheads into range. Does anyone think this is possible ? The flip side of that is that maybe I get more Mode-A/C Radarheads in my Radar.txt file. I noticed that Günther had three Mode-A/C in his Radar.txt that I am not picking up at the moment. Any input appreciated !

My location : EDLW
Does somebody have a radar.txt file suitable for NW Germany ?

I am using the GNS 5980 USB receiver and have been trying to use Planeplotters Beamfinder function.
So far with limited success.

If I open the pulse rate window for Mode A/C and S I do not get any pattern at all.
The Mode C (Altitude) window however shows the aircraft changing altitude.

On the outline map I do see radar beams and have logged them (II-1 to S-61).These log files can get quite big.
However Mode-S radar beam signals are comparatively rare.

Using the PP radar analysis tool and the radar location data fom jetvision.de I tried to identify some radars
(e.g. Maastricht SI-38, Herwijnen II-10 and Cologne SI-22&I-10) - but am very unsure as they do not lock on a known aircraft.

Looking more deeply at the analysis results I think only II-1, II-2, II-10 si-22 SI-28 and SI-60 are worthwhile following.
All other signals have more then one interval or have large scatter values (>2)

Any tips would be much appreciated.

I am not sure that the GNS 5980 supports Mode-A/C. I thought only The Beast and SBS-3 supported this. Andy (Jetvision) I know had some success in Northern Germany. As I live near Munich Airport my list is of little use to you. I think that Schipol and one in Brussels, plus one in the Czech Republic are going to be OK for you. I suggest you join the German Forum below to see if you can get any help from there....

Mike, I hope it's not a problem to link this to help a guy over here :)

I will also keep searching and post if I get any info that may help. The other thing I will add is that I also have a MicroADSB USB receiver and I had problems with that because I don't think it can transmit data fast enough to provide reliable information for the analysis in Planeplotter. It seemed to struggle somewhat and gave very different results each time I did the analysis. Maybe the GNS 5980 suffers from the same ? Germany is a problem because of clustered sites and I would strongly suggest investing in a Beast or SBS-3 for better results. It would be worth seeing what the specs are for a Kinetic Puck (when released) as if this does Mode-A/C aswell then you will get what you need at a lower cost than the SBS-3 or Beast.

Unfortunately the german forum is basically dead - with maybe one post a month.
So I doubt I would raise any interest - but I'll try.

What would be helpful is a list of active radar sites, their positions and ID's.
for North Germany, Netherlands, Begium, Luxemburg...

I have looked for at the listings of Eurocontrol and Auroratech but only found no or old info.
Currently I am using the positions in the attached file based on jetvision (and google maps)
but am not sure if these radars are active or not

Any pointers to current information would be very helpful.

I let PP collect ping data for about one week and then tried to calculate the radar positions
PP calculated
- II 2      50.1     6.8 15.831 (scatter 0.7 )
- SI 22   50.4     6.8 12.435 (scatter 0.8 )

Could this be one radar with two identifiers ?

Most radar signals are analysed with two or more intervals/rpm.
This I assume means that the signals come from different radars.
The only signals I see with only one interval are II-1, II-2, II-10, SI-22, SI-28 and SI-60.
But the calculated position does not agree with those from the radar sites.
I am not really sure how to interpret the data.

Thank you.
I had found that document -  but as it does not really match with the other data I did not pursue it further.
But I now do see some possible radar site candidates and also some explanations to the large variations in locations reported by PP.

I will test this and post an update

Hi Mezoo

If you can pin down the radar sites and then use the BF plus S facility to ID the pulses, you should find that the BF Plus S beams are exremely accurate
