Japan's two main airlines have grounded their Boeing 787 Dreamliners after one was forced to make an emergency landing because of battery problems.

All Nippon Airways (ANA) grounded its fleet of 17 Dreamliners after its flight NH 692 from Yamaguchi Ube was forced to land shortly after takeoff.

Japan Airlines followed suit, saying it would ground its fleet of seven 787s from 16 January until further notice.

This is the latest setback for Boeing and its problem-hit Dreamliner planes.

In recent weeks, Dreamliners have suffered issues including fuel leaks, a cracked cockpit window, brake problems and an electrical fire.

Boeing's troubled 787 Dreamliner continues to face problems as more global regulators and airlines grounded the plane on safety concerns.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered US airlines to stop using 787s temporarily after a battery fault caused an emergency landing in Japan.

Airlines in Chile and India quickly complied by grounding their Dreamliners.

Boeing said that it stood by the integrity of the 787.

A string of issues have raised questions about the 787's future.

Europe, Japan, India and The United States have decided to suspend the Boeing Dreamliner jets on safety concerns after a second battery-related problem forced a Japanese flight to make an emergency landing.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said that it would temporarily stop the new jet's operations, adding that the airlines will have to show that the lithium ion batteries used in the aircraft meet safety mandates before services resume.

Orders by UK airlines for Boeing's Dreamliner won't be affected by the recent problems. Thomson Airways, Virgin Atlantic and British Airways say they still plan to add the plane to their fleets. The first delivery is due this Spring.

Airline safety inspectors have found no faults with the battery used on Boeing's 787 Dreamliner, Japan's transport ministry has said.

The battery was initially considered the likely source of problems on 787s owned by two Japanese airlines.

The world's entire fleet of 50 787s has been grounded while inspections are carried out.
