THE safety of two aircraft was "compromised" when a Hawk jet came within 300ft of a paraglider.

The single-engine plane was flying at Ripon, North Yorkshire, and beginning to descend when the pilot spotted the paraglider around 300ft away.

The jet's path was diverted and as it continued to manoeuvre downwards four more paragliders came into sight of the pilot.

A report released by the UK Airprox Board concluded that "safety was not assured" in the near-miss and categorised the degree of risk as a B, the second-highest rating.

The Vale of York has always been a very active area for gliders and for military aircraft at low level but there have been relatively few incidents. I once broke cloud at 1000 ft in a Blanik all-metal glider which painted up very well on radars and was astonished to see an RAF Herc crossing in front of me about 550 yards away. That was right above RAF Dishforth which was only occupied by Clevelands Gliding Club, run by the RAFGSA at the time.
