An airport terminal has been closed and evacuated after a "suspect package" was found, airport officials confirmed.

A 100-metre security cordon is in place around Manchester Airport's Terminal 1. It was shut shortly after police were informed at about 08:15 BST.

An airport spokesman said incoming and outgoing flights are currently continuing as normal.

They advised people to make contact with their airline if they were concerned about their flight.

Hundreds of holidaymakers were hit by flight chaos after a bomb scare – sparked by contact lens fluid and a mobile phone.

Nervous security officials rang police after a suspicious shape showed up on Manchester Airport's baggage scanner yesterday morning.

All of Terminal 1 was evacuated shortly after 8.15am – leaving passengers waiting behind a 100m cordon as bomb disposal experts probed the bag.

The investigation lasted four hours, until the terminal was eventually reopened at 12.15pm.

Investigators found a bottle of contact lens solution had been packaged tightly with a mobile phone, sparking the alert.
