Should new members be allowed to sell straight away?

Sun Worshipper

Having seen the recent Canon camera up for sale and noticing that it was the members first post, I was wondering what our members feel about first time posters being allowed to sell their items here.  Should they have a genuine interest in our hobby rather than just 'use' our membership to flog their stuff?

I belong to other sites where you have to attain either so may posts or a period of time before you are allowed to sell your items.

I also suppose that if you wanted to buy this particular camera/lens combo then you might say, great.

Your comments?

If I thought this was an issue it would be covered by the forum rules.

By all means share your thoughts but I don't see this as something that needs to be regulated.

I don't think regulation is necessary.

The post in question seems genuine enough, the item is well described and plenty of photos to back up the description.

I guess if something didn't 'feel' right about a particular item for sale someone would be asking questions..

But as always, caveat emptor.

Cheers,

Keef.

I don't think Sun Worshipper was refering to the item for sale itself, more the idea of straight into the forum and selling something as a first post with not even so much as an introduction.
Introducing oneself to the group first would have been the polite way and probably wouldn't have even raised an eyebrow. The way it looks is he has joined only to sell and nothing else.
Just my way of seing things.

Maybe we need to view this in context?

Nearly 70% of the members have never posted.

Many join to download Guides and Software and never post.

This is a forum and resource for those who have an interest in aviation.  There are no Rules about introducing oneself before downloading files or making a post.

I am sorry if I have offended anyone.

Just to point out I am a user of planeplotter and I use RTL dongle to recieve my data, I brought the aforementioned item from Cosycave, not an advertisement for them.

I have been a number cruncher for a number of years now, and now i have finally took the plunge into ADSB reception.  Some people seem to think that the sbs is a dying hobby, as a lot of people use their phone to connect to flightradar24, great but without raw data feeders where would they be?

I can see the point of both sides of the argument and yes maybe I should of introduced myself, in hindsight.

I will be a regular contributor to the site.

I went off topic there a bit but should new members be limited to not posting selling items, it depends, I would say no as the only people who would register to use this site are people interested in our hobby.

Hi Preston, you certainly didn't offend me.

I belong to other sites which restrict new members using the buy and sell facility until they have achieved so many posts or a specific period of time.

Personally, I couldn't give a monkeys but wanted to ask the guys here what they felt about it.

Hope you sold the camera.

I see sunworshipper.

I also belong to a few other sites but most of them are aimed specifically at number crunchers.

Anyway Camera still here, and don't mind it sitting here until it finds a new home.  I won't put on ebay as I don't get along with their platform and getting charged three times for a transaction I find expensive. Once to list, commision and Paypal fees.
