Basestation not displaying all received aircraft

I am hoping someone may be able to shed a little light on a small issue I am noticing with my SBS-1 (classic). It seems to be going partially deaf at times and I cannot find out why. What I am seeing is the aircraft list being populated reasonably well (filtered for 'interested only'), but those same planes do not appear on the 'Radar screen', I know all about non-positional etc. so that's not it. This effect seems to start after a period of normal running almost like something is being overloaded / overheated?

I checked both the 'display selected only' and 'display interested only' were not active - toggled them both to be sure. I checked the various settings fields but all appeared normal there too.

Yesterday I was at Heathrow so the message rate there is obviously quite high, 4 blue lights on permanently suggesting the box is at least receiving plenty of messages, but my screen was bereft of almost all planes on the ground and a lot in the air, almost like there was a massive "doughnut effect" but it wasn't consistent as some planes did show. Why would only a couple of (on the ground) planes show on the screen when many more are in the list?

I changed the USB cable and re-tested, no change, I replaced my normal Mag Mount (MD-1105) antenna with the stock SBS-1 unit, again no difference. But strangely, after a further period of running (a couple of hours), things seemed to improve significantly and I had done nothing to the set-up – honest guv 

I also run PP alongside Basestation and the same effect was apparent there so it seems as though the information was only partially reaching Basestation and was not being passed to PP either.

My Netbook is a 1.6 MHz Intel atom N450 so it is a little light on horse power but it does have 2 gb of RAM.

This problem has only recently started, I have had the same combination of equipment for about 2 years (SBS is a lot older) and I have not seen this happen before, so something has changed somewhere.

Could it be something has become dislodged inside the SBS? It does get a fair bit of handling as it's the mobile unit so it's in and out of a bag on each occasion. I guess further testing is necessary, but can anyone suggest where to look?

Is you BNC connector loose on the back of the SBS1

Have you inadvertently disabled the "Show All" button.I am sure you are aware of its location,above the aircraft list.As you toggle this button avert your attention to the bottom left of the screen and you will notice the the total number of aircraft `seen` will alter as you toggle.

Maybe the USB connector at the SBS is damaged.  Or is the laptop power settings closing down the power to the SBS-1?

GB, it's not the button, that only changes the list view not the radar screen view.

mhm, I don't think it's lose as I get 4 blue's so I assume the messages are getting through to the box, a 'wiggle and a jiggle' of the BNC doesn't seem to suggest it's lose.

Anmer, I am suspicious of the USB, I will check the power settings. The USB connection on the SBS looks OK to me.

I assume you are changing the coordinates to your new location every time.

Changing the coordinates should have no impact on receiving data.

What I will try and do this weekend is swap my 1er - my home installation - for my 1 (classic) and test the box that way. If it comes back as NFF then I can turn my attention to the Netbook.

Do you have a DC power adapter for the classic SBS-1?

If you have try powering it with that to eliminate the USB power supply?

Thanks for that, good suggestion, I'll have a look around and see what I can find, I think I might have something but if I remember the plug is a little larger than normal.

btw, I checked all the USB ports and none of them allow for the power to be controlled by windows - it's XP as well, not that that matters too much

I found a power adapter! It's 12v 500mA with the correct sized plug - is that OK? as I recall something about a 5v and 12v version of the SBS-1 - I don't want to blow something up inside it.
