Billko,

That's very interesting. When was he with 9 Flt? When I trained as an aircraft technician all the instructors were RN or RAF and I was on a number of AAC units that had FAA personnel as part of the maintenance crew. I did a stint on the Inter Service Hovercraft Trials Unit at HMS Daedalus and a few stints at sea on board the Ark, Hermes and Bulwark, so I have an affinity with the FAA.  I even did the underwater aircrew escape training in the tower at HMS Vernon. Your bro-in-law might like to know there is a website exclusively for those who have served or are serving with Army Aviation. He might meet up with someone he knew on there. It's at : http://www.contact.armyaviation.co.uk/

Billko,

I remember the Scimitar that went into the bay at Khormaksar on 22 May 63.  I was just across the bay when it happened. A couple of months earlier on 23 March an Armstrong Whitworth Argosy C.1, XP413, of 105 Squadron, ditched in Aden harbour whilst on finals to the same runway at Khormaksar, when, during crew training, the number four (starboard outer) engine was shut down for practice. Due to confusion in the cockpit, the crew managed to shut down both starboard engines without feathering either and the Argosy came down with remarkably little damage, settling on its undercarriage in about 5 feet of water. The following day, a party of Royal Marines from 42 Commando, wearing frogman gear, had a photo taken sitting in the cabin seats with water up to their chests.
