Thanks Chris, now I have enough data to decide.

You can fit a lantronix ethernet module to the beast not sure about the puck if it has one, maybe handy in your situation for remote control. It doesn't need a pc to send data to anywhere.

cheers

That's really interesting. Do you mean something like this?

The Puck doesn't have a serial port and I don't think the Beast has either.

I use a Silex USB/Ethernet device server.  Mine is the SX-DS-3000WAN.

Sorry for the late reply, been busy in the fields with this fine weather, http://www.lantronix.com/device-networking/embedded-device-servers/xport.html is the loose ethernet module

http://wiki.modesbeast.com/Mode-S_Beast:Lantronix_Xport_Assembly is the assembly page and the available kit is i think this
http://www.jmz-shop.de/mode-s-beast/product.php?id_product=12, slightly more expensive as it comes with a bigger box etc to fit everything in it. Its the one i have.

Many thanks Derek, thinking now what's more convenient for me.
