T.V. Soundbars-

Has anyone ever purchased a soundbar or similar to improve sound quality from a flat screen television and did it offer any improvement?

Yes, big improvement.  But there are soundbars and soundbars as well as other options such as soundbases.

Mine was a birthday present, a relatively cheap LG soundbar used with a Samsumg TV using optical connection.

Check the TV connections first.
