'Faulty wiring NOT an excuse for flight delays'

Airlines will have to pay out compensation for lengthy flight delays caused by technical faults after a landmark court ruling today that could open the floodgates for potentially millions of claims.

Budget airline Jet2 had taken the case to the Court of Appeal after a judge initially ruled in favour of 58-year-old passenger Ron Huzar, of Offerton, Stockport, whose flight from Manchester to Malaga in 2011 was delayed by 27 hours because of a wiring defect.

Under EU law, airlines must pay up to €600 compensation for flight delays longer than three hours, but airlines can deny compensation if the delay was caused by 'extraordinary circumstances' like industrial action or extreme weather.
