Hi Mike

I have an SBS-1er with Basestation software (161), firmware version (159).

Should I be upgrading to Basestaion (164).

Regards,

Charlie

Should I be upgrading to Basestaion (164).

Basestation 161 is the latest version for the SBS-1.

Whilst I've read that Basestation V.164 will work with an SBS-1, I'm not aware of any new functionality.  But since this version is only available on a CD that ships with the SBS-3, there's currently no option to upgrade from V.161.

One rumour that's doing the rounds is that any future upgrades to Basestation will only work with the SBS-3 though I've not seen any evidence to that affect.

Hi,

I've got the Basestation 1.64 on CD with my SBS3, made a zip(winrar) file 0f 8,5 Mb of it , could sent it by Wetransfer or upload.

I wouldn't mind a copy to do some testing?

Unfortunately we can't host it here.  Kinetic would send the boys around.   8)

I have been using Basestation 164 or 161 + SBS3 tweaks, that's all I can find nothing of any significant defiance for the SBS1 AT ALL.  As i have posted on a different forum the lack of information from Kinetic, regarding the SBS1 family of receivers future is most disturbing.

Anmer may remember the post.

I'm currently running Basestation 165 with an SBS-1eR and it works fine.

But there are no "usable" new features.  Unfortunately the option to change the SBS-1 IP address via Basestation appears to only apply to the SBS-3.

Hopefully Kinetic will improve communication with all SBS users - old and new.  I'm definitely in the "old" category.  :'(

All this stuff about the future of SBS-1 has me totally baffled. The SBS-1er that I owned did exactly what Kinetic said it would do. I never saw anything from Kinetic promising it would do any more. I have now bought an SBS-3 because I like the idea of being able to feed PlanePlotter from it without having to run a patch and having 2 SDRs and the promise of AIS and more to come. Before it arrived Kinetic emailed me the .exe file and instructions for Basestation v 165. Although I had not run Basestation for some nine months (I've been running a Beast) it installed and ran my old Basestation.sqb file. Within minutes I had the it talking to PlanePlotter and the two SDRs tuned to 4 aircraft frequencies. And I didn't read the manual.

Buying an ADS-B receiver is a bit like buying cars. When, (as happened to me), less than a year after you bought your shiny new car, the  manufacturer brings out a new version of it at a lower price which gives 15 mpg more, has lower emissions and therefore costs £90 per annum less in road tax and has some ten other worthwhile improvements, you didn't go bleating to the dealer. Did you?

Particularly bemusing was the guy on the other day who has one of the first SBS-1s and expects it to be upgraded after all these years.  ???

Let's face it, without PlanePlotter you would not be able to track all those non-positional aircraft with any of the currently available receivers and in fact only two of them, AirNav and Kinetic, actually supply a decent software package with their boxes, the others relying on PlanePlotter to do the job.

Maybe some are thinking about Chris Taylor's post back in August 2011 when he said he'd let SBS-1 owners know about providing Raw data.  To the best of my recollection there's not been a further statement?

We are still investigating the SBS-1 at this time and will let you know when we conclude our tests.

I think Chris was being too helpful. You know how small a team they have. There is no money to be made from issuing free upgrades for 5 year old SBS-1s. If they divert their attention to that they'll never get all the other work don.

As for that guy who asked the question - surely all the info he wants, what each release does and which model it's applicable to - has already been discussed on these forums.

All that's required is an unequivocal answer.  Ducking the question just leaves a vacuum which others will seek to fill.

C'mon Mike. Who's going to fill the slot? The SBS-3 has already done it. I bet they've sold over a thousand already.  ;)

I meant fill with their own interpretations and rumours.

If Chris is quoting a thousand, remember he's a good salesman.  I always divide by 10.  ;)

Chris hasn't quoted a figure to me, I'm just surmising. It would be interesting to know but I guess we never will due to the need to keep the opposition guessing.

If the SBS-1 never gets another upgrade, its still a good working box. I will never get rid of mine, it could be worth a few quid on bargain hunt in the future
