Paid for by getting people off the older versions so they can drop cost of support with updates?

In theory, except support will have to continue for Vista, Win 7 and Win 8.  Too many corporates won't do an immediate upgrade.

Hope God mode works in 10

Corporates are probably on Win7 - the company I work for moved to it from XP a couple of years ago. Skipped Vista and I doubt they will go to Win8.

The FREE upgrade is to try and compete with OS X, the growth in tablet applications and cloud based storage/profiles.

Microsoft's main concern is continuing decline in market share which it feels will be further eroded if it charges for this upgrade.

Having reserved copies of the free Windows 10 download months ago for both my laptop and Desk-top  HP devices, yesterday my laptop told me that Windows 10 was available. 90 minutes later I have a working version of 10 and it is running well and looks good.  The desk-top PC, also an HP, was not showing that 10 was available and it said that downloads are being spread out. However, I did notice that on this machine the windows symbol (and reservation status data) on the right hand side of the task-bar has disappeared. Investigating further in windows diagnostics I got a pop-up window saying "Unsupported version - The Windows 10 app is not available for this version of Windows.  It is an HP 64-bit machine with 8.1 and is only 10 months old!!!. , If I go into the HP support window on the PC it says my copy of windows 10 is not ready yet and I will be advised when available for download. I am a little bit confused at the moment......When reserving the free version of 10 I checked suitability of the PC's and both came up as suitable. Any ideas

I've put Win 10 on 2 of my 3 machines and am not experiencing any issues.
I expect I'll get a sharer code change for PP when I finally do that box but not a big issue.

However, if you are a bit of a nerd like me then you might want to take care when installing Win 10 as there is quite a bit of sharing of your data going on by default.

Some stuff you might want to allow, some you might not, but here's a useful guide:
