American Airlines flight AA65 had taken off from Zurich, Switzerland, and was due to fly to New York City today.

However, the windscreen of the Boeing 767-300 suffered damage while flying over Europe and had to land at the West London airport.

A spokesman for American Airlines said: "There was a cracked windscreen and an emergency was declared. The plane landed safely at Heathrow Airport around 11.30am."
