Heathrow has been named as the preferred site for London's new runway.

The proposal is expected to be backed - but only if it meets stringent conditions on air quality, noise pollution and carbon emissions.

The three year study into expansion plans by the Airports Commission has recommended a runway built to the northwest of Heathrow would ensure the UK's "long term prosperity".

Residents and politicians say they will continue to fight expansion of Heathrow, despite many in the business community welcoming the Airport Commission's decision to recommend a third runway.

Groups representing people who live near the west London airport were united in their dismay about the decision, and said they would "see it off".

I concur with that statement Mike!
What politicians promise and what politicians deliver are usually light years apart.

I think that both should have new runways. Heathrow will be public funded but Gatwick is private money and therefore no risk to the public funds.

Bring on both thats what i say.

Hi all,

It's only a recommendation. Pity they took all that time to come to the wrong recommendation (my opinion) !

Reminds me of Deep Thought in HHGTTG
Para-phrased with apologies to Douglas Adams...

"Good Morning," said Deep Thought at last.
"Er..good morning, O Deep Thought" said Loonquawl nervously, "do you have...er, that is..."
"An Answer for you?" interrupted Deep Thought majestically. "Yes, I have."
The two men shivered with expectancy. Their waiting had not been in vain.
"There really is one?" breathed Phouchg.
"There really is one," confirmed Deep Thought.
"To Everything? To the great Question of Life, the Universe and everything Aviation?"
"Yes."
Both of the men had been trained for this moment, their lives had been a preparation for it, they had been selected at birth as those who would witness the answer, but even so they found themselves gasping and squirming like excited children.
"And you're ready to give it to us?" urged Loonsuawl.
"I am."
"Now?"
"Now," said Deep Thought.
They both licked their dry lips.
"Though I don't think," added Deep Thought. "that you're going to like it."
"Doesn't matter!" said Phouchg. "We must know it! Now!"
"Now?" inquired Deep Thought.
"Yes! Now..."
"All right," said the computer, and settled into silence again. The two men fidgeted. The tension was unbearable.
"You're really not going to like it," observed Deep Thought.
"Tell us!"
"All right," said Deep Thought. "The Answer to the Great Question..."
"Yes..!"
"Of Life, the Universe and Everything Aviation..." said Deep Thought.
"Yes...!"
"Is..." said Deep Thought, and paused.
"Yes...!"
"Is..."
"Yes...!!!...?"
"Heathrow," said Deep Thought, with infinite majesty and calm."

You could be right.

You cant apply this to Singapore Changi Airport:

- Currently Terminal 4 is being built ( check Google Earth ) - looks like a 2nd Control Tower is being built also.

- SGD 1.1 Billion is being spent on ground preparation ( removal of 10,000 trees ), raise the ground level by 2 metres ( to prepare for Global Warming ) and the current Coastal Road will be dig up for Terminal 5

- Terminal 5 ( bigger than Terminal 1, 2 & 3 combined ) will be built in 4 years time, the current military runway will be raised up by 2 metres, widen and extended to accept A380.

- Major Roads diversions will be carried out and 2 Golf Courses have to give way for Changi Airport Expansion.

The good thing of building Changi Airport on reclaimed land is - you can do anything you want to expand the airport without asking anyone for permission.
