Inventor pitches detachable airplane cabin to save lives during crashes

The latest innovation in airplane safety might just be a detachable cabin, at least according to a Russian inventor who released his designs for the technology this week.

Tatarenko Vladimir Nikolaevich has spent three years working on the project, which would allow for an airplane's cabin to detach at any point during mid-flight, takeoff, or landing in case of emergency, The Independent reported.

In the event of detachment, parachutes would deploy to deliver the cabin to a safe landing on the ground or in the water.

Solar Impulse Team Reveals 2016 Plans
Solar-powered round-the-world flight is scheduled to resume this spring.

The Solar Impulse team has released its plans for 2016, including the continuation of the round-the-world flight of the all-solar-powered Si2. With new batteries installed, flight testing will begin in Hawaii toward the end of February, but the team does not plan to take off across the Pacific Ocean until April 20 at the earliest.

Rather than planning just one route for the continued journey, the Solar Impulse team is giving itself options to allow the Si2 pilots and Solar Impulse co-founders, André Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard, to take advantage of the best weather opportunities at the time of the flights. For the first leg, the team has selected four potential destinations along the western edge of North America: Vancouver, Canada; San Francisco; Los Angeles and Phoenix.

Boeing to reduce 747-8 production after low market demand

Boeing has announced it will reduce the production rate of its 747-8 in order to align supply with near-term demand in the cargo market.

The reduction is the fourth for the company in less than two years.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Ray Conner said: "Global air passenger traffic growth and airplane demand remain strong, but the air cargo market recovery that began in late 2013 has stalled in recent months and slowed demand for the 747-8 freighter.

"While we remain confident in the 747-8's unique value-proposition and an upcoming replacement cycle for late-model 747-400 freighters, we are taking the prudent step to further align production with current market requirements."
