O'HARE DRAWS YOUNG 'PLANE SPOTTING' ENTHUSIASTS
O'Hare International Airport is not just the world's second busiest airport for travelers. It's also a favorite spot for a unique hobby called plane spotting, which has attracted some young fans.

A plane spotter, camera in hand as an incoming airplane descends, has only a few seconds to snap the perfect shot of the miracle of flight.

"Getting to see these giant machines that should not fly but they do, it's just amazing," said Parker Davis, a plane spotter from Dallas.

2015 Orders, Deliveries Dwindle at Airbus Helicopters

Orders and deliveries at Airbus Helicopters last year fell to 333 and 393 helicopters, respectively, down from 402 and 471 in 2014. Revenues were even between French helicopter manufacturer's civil and military activities, it said.

CEO Guillaume Faury blamed low oil prices, which have hurt Airbus Helicopters' offshore oil customers, and "delays in key military campaigns." A mere two orders were thus received for the H225 family. Nevertheless, the company claims a slight increase in market share for civil and parapublic operations, to 45 percent by volume. A strong performer was the H175 super-medium twin, with 36 orders booked. The order book will open this year for the new H160 medium twin, the second prototype of which has just flown with Turbomeca engines.

World Economic Forum Draws 440 Business Aircraft

he (sic) four major airports used for last week's World Economic Forum (WEF) at Davos, Switzerland, drew 440 business aircraft and nearly 1,100 aircraft movements, according to business aviation analyst WingX Advance. This was down slightly from last year's WEF. Business aircraft averaged 220 daily movements at Zurich (LSZH), Dubendorf (LSMD), Altenrhein (LSZR), and St. Moritz (LSZS) from last Tuesday through Saturday, down 6.5 percent from the 235 movements tracked daily during the WEF last year, WingX reported. Last Tuesday marked the busiest day, with a collective 170 departures and 104 arrivals.

Man devises genius airplane tracker for his house near LaGuardia Airport

After watching countless planes land at LaGuardia and wondering where they were flying from, the New York Times journalist/developer devised a system to display the plane's origin on his windowsill.

The software he created, called Flyover, basically takes a bunch of information that airplanes are transmitting via their transponders, runs it through a couple different programs, then displays the origin airport of "that plane flying over my apartment RIGHT NOW."

PlanePlotter version 6.4.4.1 now available for download - Released January 26, 2016

From Bev,

Hi,

PlanePlotter version 6.4.4.1 is now available for download by following the link on the PlanePlotter web site.
http://www.planeplotter.com

-----------
New in version 6.4.4.1

Manual Mlats

When you did a manual Mlat in previous versions, the request for raw data from other Ground Stations was sent through the server.  In this version, the request is made directly to each Ground Station.  This relieves the server of the load associated with the request but I am hoping that some routers, even if port forwarding has not been done, might see the outgoing packets and guess where to send the returning packets.  The evidence is not 100% in favour but there is some optimism that it might work on some systems.  Please be aware that correctly implemented port forwarding is still 100% required for any system that aspires to fulfill the role of Ground Station.

Plane Finder Radar receiver

This release of PlanePlotter supports the impending new Plane Finder Radar receiver.  There is a new option in the Mode-S list box in Options..I/O settings.  Initial testing of this receiver indicates that its performance is on a par with the other high-performing receivers for Mode-S and Mode-A//C.

ADSBspy update

This release supports the optional new firmware for the ADSBspy receiver that now adds the signal strength to the received data.

Registrations via sharing

If you enabled the option to accept registrations via sharing, in the past it could have overwritten a real registration with the .NO-REG remark if that arrived from a sharing user with no SQB database.  This version will no longer overwrite a registration with .NO-REG even if it is received via sharing and updating is enabled.

Cosmetics

The Tools..Display ping log option no longer acquires a tick if no file was actually selected.

If you select Upload Only, it no longer shows "download failed" in the status bar every share cycle.  The same symptom that used to appear during a manual Mlat will have disappeared as the server is no longer in the loop for a manual Mlat.

Enjoy!
Regards
Bev

Airbus Helicopters' second H160 prototype takes off

The H160's second prototype took off today in Marignane, kicking off a busy 2016 for the H160 as it pursues its flight test program with two prototypes.

The second prototype is the first H160 to fly with the Turbomeca Arrano engines. PT1 had accumulated more than 75 hours of flight testing by the end of 2015, allowing the aircraft to open the flight envelope and validating some of the helicopter's excellent features and outstanding handling qualities right from the start.

This company detects aircraft cracking and its shares are up 287pc this year
Delta Air Lines is using Structural Monitoring System's sensors to detect fatigue on some of its aircraft.

SMS shares have risen by 40 per cent to $1.47 since it received approval in late December from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Boeing for its technology after a test program with some of Delta's 737s.
Overall, SMS shares have risen by 287 per cent over the last 12 months, compared with a 10.1 per cent fall in the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index over the same period.

The FAA and Boeing approvals mean SMS has the only commercially-approved technology for on-aircraft monitoring of cracking and structural fatigue in the world. The sensors are placed on the aircraft and help provide early warning of any developing cracks.
