Thanks for all your input and advice, I have now Installed windows 7, and have all my radar stuff running well, it was a bit sticky getting the port forward sorted but that was due to a lack of router knowledge on my part.
regards Gordon.

In my opinion, ditch XP if you can.  It will no longer be supported as an OS beyond April 2014.

All of the woes that individuals highlight are because of a W7 feature called UAC.  To make W7 work in a transparent way, with all software, simply disable UAC - it's real easy.  There's lots of internet advice on how to - here's one:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-user-account-control-uac-the-easy-way-on-windows-vista/

Once it's disabled you won't have any "virtual drives", everything just runs from the folder you install it in, including the default Program Files and Program Files (x86) folders.

I've also heard the "you can't do that - it's unsafe" statement by folks, but anyone running XP today doesn't have UAC so what's the difference?  All you need is anti-virus software and a good firewall, something everyone should have anyway.

The only issue is programs that won't run under XP.  Personally I haven't found any that come into this category!

Finally W7 is quicker and much more stable that XP IMHO.

Cheers
