Dump1090 - No maps when server viewed from outside LAN

Hi,

I used to post here a year or two ago and stopped as other things took over my time.

I just installed dump1090 on an old netbook and it works great with my E4000 dongle and an 8 element collinear made out of coax.

I can view the maps produced by dump1090 on another machine from inside my network, but even when the firewall is shut down, no maps can be seen from the Internet side as tested on my phone and by a pal I gave my ip address and port number to. The LIve data works fine from outside though and you can see the packets numbers changing from the WAN. There is a Java error message that comes up where the google map would be (in fact the map appears for about a second and then disappears to be replaced by the error message).

Here is the message that comes up:

! Sorry, Something went wrong.
This page didn't load Google maps correctly. See the Javascript console for technical details.

I am querying in this format: Ip address:8080

That is the way I access the dump1090 webserver from the LAN. Obviously the internal address is a different one to the WAN ip address, but that bit is OK because the page starts to load and then continues to stream the data even when the map has failed.

I can connect to the dump1090 machine with Virtual Radar Server and can display the information on a different laptop, but ONLY from within the LAN. Out on the WAN, I see no map except for a half a second.

I'd really appreciate any pointers if you can help me. Thanks

Anmer

If you're trying to access the Dump1090 map on port 8080 from outside your local network (LAN), you'll need to setup port forwarding on your router.

Thanks Anmer. I did that. The live data section of the dump1090 web page is visible outside the network from the Internet. The same problem happens even when I temporarily shut down the router's firewall. The only thing affected is the google maps part of the page. The map flashes up for a moment, and then it greys out and the error message comes up. meanwhile, the list of aircraft is visible and the data is changing by the second.

Hope that is clearer now.

Cheers

So everything works OK when you access the Dump1090 map remotely except the map fails to load and you get the error message?

Hi Anmer,

Yes - that's right. What is more, if I configure Visual Radar to access the Dump1090 ports from outside the network, by telling it that teh receiver ip address is my home external IP address and port number (I set up port forwarding on the router firewall) the whole thing works perfectly and the remote instance of Visual Radar shows everything correctly.

From inside the home network, the Dump1090 web page loads properly, maps and all, but outside the home network, the external Ip address only returns the right hand side of the page where the lines of text and number data are. The map loads for about a second and I can see planes on it sometimes, but then almost at once, it fails, the map is replaced by a grey box and the error message I listed above is presented.

Cheers

Thanks for the info Ian. I doubt I am going to be able to sort that out for myself. My success rate on linux is negligible. I managed a work around by accessing my system from outside via Virtual Radar Server. The maps and features are much better anyway in that than the rather crude and simple Dump1090 server anyway.

As an aside, I am AMAZED at the result I am getting from the FlightAware dongle and the associated 1090MHZ band pass filter. I can see planes from the edge of Holland to Dublin and from London to North of Aberdeen. I never had barely half the range before and I thought I was doing well. This outfit cost a total of £29, has a home made antenna made out of 8 coax collinear elements in a plastic tube (total cost about £2. I'm uploading 350,000 position reports a day to Flight Aware, whereas before I was lucky to upload 74,000.

I think FlightAware is working on a longer term solution that, hopefully, avoids entering API keys.

I have this same problem, in the last weeks, whit my Raspi, amb Dump1090.  Message error say this page not load Google maps correctly.  View javascript console... (and this page not load Google maps,  only outside of my local LAN)..
