Adding and editing airfields and navaids?

Hi all  :)

Just joined here. Been using SBS-1 for over 8 year now and today I made a new airport that is not yet opened. It was my first time at trying this, but it was quite easy once you work it out.

So the layout, buildings, taxi lines, praking etc. are all done. Now I need to add the the navaids, extended runway centrelines, airport name, etc....

This is the bit I don't know how to do. I am sure there's a tutorial somewhere, but can you kindly point me in the direction of it?  ;)

Thanks :)

Skywatch.

Welcome.

Centrelines are produced by our member Acarslogger, I think using a script he produced.

Airport names, if used in BaseStation, are Waypoints and are easily added to whatever Waypoint file you're using.

Here's an example from my UK.wpt file.

Lyneham,EGDL,2,1,51.50527778,-1.993333333,513
Manchester,EGCC,2,1,53.35374722,-2.274947222,257
Manston,EGMH,2,1,51.34213889,1.346194444,178

Bones has a useful Tutorial about Waypoints:

http://woodair.net/sbs/Article/Barebones32_BaseStation.htm

You'll find it under Outlines!

What Navaids were you wanting to make?

Thanks that's useful.

I don't know about the nacaids yet as they won't be published until the airport is open. When that will be is anybodies guess (Originall scheduled to open at least 6 years ago).

Another question springs to mind. I am updating RAF Faiirford and it's all going well except identifying taxi markings. Is there an easy way to do this? I need to delete some and have trouble finding the right ones. - Maybe a cad utility exists to import .OUT files?  :P

Thanks Anmer, nice to see you still at this!  ;)

I'm not sure if you're having problems "identifying" taxi markings on the Google satellite image for Fairford or setting them separately in the .out file?

I already have an existing version of Fairford, but the base has changed and I need to update it to reflect the current layout (same with Brize Norton).

Trouble is that finding the *existing* taxi lines in the out file is proving more troublesome than I first thought. There are taxi lines that need to be deleted and finding where they are in the out file is really time consuming.

Is there a way I have not thought of that would make identifying lines in the overlay to where they are  in the out file?

Hope this is clearer now! ;)

Thanks.

The problem with the Outline Maker is the data is linear, lines between points are added as one creates them.

The best option is to have separate .out files for each line type - runways, taxiways, buildings etc.

But even with this approach, editing a file is pretty difficult.  As you've discovered.

Oh what joy!  >:(  ;)

Looks like I need a lot of wet weather then ;)

Hi,

One way that may help you identify a group of coordinates in an Basestation outline file is to use the $TYPE=nn.

In Basestation go to Settings > Display Settings > Outlines and there a 30 different outline types each of which can have its own colour.
Types 1 to 10 is the left hand column (top to bottom), 11 to 20 the middle column (top to bottom), and 21 to 30 the right hand column (top to bottom).

Inside your outline file insert a $TYPE=nn between a block of coordinates after the '-1'

...
51.123+0.123
-1
$TYPE=29
51.456+0.456
...
51.567+0.567
-1
$TYPE=30
51.678+0.678
...

When you save and re-display the file, the lines will be displayed in the defined colour e.g.
$TYPE=29
51.456+0.456
...
51.567+0.567
-1
will be displayed in the colour that has been associated with Type 29.

Doesn't make it easy, but maybe a bit less difficult !

Stuart

That's actually not a bad idea!  :)

I tried adding them to google maps as a csv file and had no luck with that. When I get more time I might play around with it some more.

I didn't explain myself too well but Stuart has pointed the advantages of using a different $TYPE for each colour.  That's basically what a separate file for each type of outline can achieve, which you can either keep as separate files or merge into one.

There's a Guide to creating and using Outlines here:

Thanks for all the suggestions but please remember that this is an *exisiting* airfield that I am trying to update. The original author had no comments in at all so it is a case of reverse engineering what is already there and modifying the neccessary bits to update it to todays actual layouts.

I will keep going at it until it is done! ;)

Cheers!

After a couple of long days work I finally have mastered it (more or less!)..... 8)

I now have RAF Fairford updated to the latest available google images and with more detail than the original. Well pleased. ;D

From scratch I also did Spanish Airports Murcia Corvera (not yet open) and Murcia San Javier (LELC).
Both are Hi-Res detailed but there is a problem......... >:(

At LELC there are 3 green lines on the ground that approximate the runways and cross taxyway. I guess there are there with some defualt file? How to go about getting rid of them? Is there a master airport database somewhere that might be responsible for this?

Thanks

Skywatch.

In BaseStation:

Settings-> Display Settings-> Data Files

On the right you should have a list of all the Outline files in your Outlines folder.

Against each is a check box to allow you to choose which ones to apply.  Maybe work your way through the list, unchecking a file at a time until the interloper disappears?

Then check that specific .out file to see what else is in it?

Got the little $£%&*... >:(  :) :) :)

Is there a place to share these files? I am thinking of doing a few more but have 3 ready to go now.

And to find it, I found it quicker to have explorer open and just rename the files from *.out to *.off - #saves a lot of time going through the menus!

Thanks for the help.

Next challenge will be........ Upgrading from win7 to win10 - Widh me luck! ;)
