Howdy, been on here for years but had to re-register.

Today my SBS-1 has stopped working, never ever been an issue before now.

I pulled it ut the loft
PSU is supplying volts
tried another PSU also supplying volts
Took apart, no burn issues
No dry solder joints
Seemingly no onboard fuse
no loose cables
no knudging of cables LIVE flickered power

So no reason to stop working.

Has anyone any other ideas to try, is it worth a professional repair?

Welcome.

What model version SBS do you have?  I assume you connect using Ethernet cable?

Has your local network changed - router reboot, change of broadband/IP provider?

Hi Anmer

You have helped me a few times in the past too.

SBS-1 but with a Network card added, so yes over ethernet

Nope no network changes, rebooted router only to attempt to solve the issue before i realised there was no power to the SBS-1 (was in the loft) No change of ISP either.
So SBS-1 now out of the loft on my desk, two PSU nothing else plugged in (no network no antenna) and no power LEDs or no sign of life what so ever. The PSU's are pushing volts

thoughts?

Anmer

Thanks.  What about the power slider that chooses between USB or DC supply?

great thinking...

So tested position 1 then plugged power in - NOPE
Power out
tested position 2 then plugged power in - NOPE

So then that got me thinking, out with a USB cable and that WORKS, result

So either the PSU's are not giving enough juice or the power is not making it to the board somehow.

Can anyone confirm the Volts/mA that its meant to be, the one that came with it is AMIGO and output is 12V 100mA 12VA

What is the Ethernet module that you've added?  What's the serial number of the SBS?

I have this stored away:

Forget 5v power for anything other than the original batch of SBS1 Mk1 boxes before unit 5000. SBS1 Mk2 was 12v but this can be dropped down to a minimum of 7v to keep temps down (useful for those with the Ethernet module).

You may need a more powerful DC supply.  100mA may not be enough?  I think you need at least 200mA.

Yeah it's a SBS-1 MKII serial 005607

I unplugged the ethernet module as a test and nothing still

I tried all the PSU's I have I think the highest was 1200mA (sorry typo on my previous post not 100mA but 1000mA)

Not looking good!

Thanks.  Is the Ethernet add-on a Kinetic device or from Jetvision?

I'm assuming the USB cable delivers power and the SBS lights come on?  But when removed and you power the SBS using a DC supply, there are no lights?

If this is correct, you have a power issue and not necessarily an Ethernet one.

Have you tried using the Ethernet and USB (for power only)?

NO, thank you. Can't recall but proper one been in the loft for years on the SBS-1, Kinetic likely.

Yes, USB=lights on. and Yes remove goes off, flick the toggle and any PSU dead as a Dodo

Yep, tested without network add on connected to pins inside the SBS

Have you tried using the Ethernet and USB (for power only)?
Yeah, had high hopes but does not work, network card does not light up on the SBS (ethernet socket/back off) nor on the ethernet switch, I guess that's a no no anyhow as USB cant deliver that much power sadly. (to power the SBS and the Network card)

Really appreciate all your time and help here

Anmer

Thanks again for the feedback.

Let me rummage around in my kit to see if I can find an SBS-1 with the Ethernet module.  Then I can be "testing" alongside you.  It will be tomorrow before I can find it.

Sorry, this took a bit longer than expected.

I've found my SBS-1 with the "after market" Kinetic Ethernet module.

I have it working using Ethernet, powered by a Masterplug MVA1200 1200mA Mains Multi-Voltage Adaptor.

I have it set to 5 volts with positive tip polarity.  It's working just fine.  Mine was from Amazon but it's not available there.

https://www.argos.co.uk/product/9829701

The key thing was to push the power source slider towards the input socket and set the tip to positive polarity.  The output connector used was the largest, 5.5mm jack, 2.5mm pin.

Wonderful work - thank you so much for taking the time.

So mine too is a SBS-1 MK II with the "after market" Kinetic Ethernet module

5 Volts sound very low but if it works for you. I will get one of those adaptors then and test, checking the toggle switch.

What are you useing then if not using your SBS-1, raspberry pi? who are you data sharing to if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks again for being so so helpful

I normally use an SBS-1eR for BaseStation.

I have a prototype FR24 "Beast" in which I have an FR24 SD card, sharing with FR24.

Then an RPi running PiAware, with an (unbelievably good) AiNav FlightStick sharing with FlightAware.

And a VariFlight receiver sharing to VariFlight.

My AirNav RadarBox is not in use as I don't wish to share anything with Brandao.  I resisted putting it in the cat's litter tray  ;D

wow - you have a one man ADS-B data sharing farm going on there!

I would love a prototype FR24 "Beast" +card, how would a long time (+10years) FR24 data sharer become a tester and help FR24 with it?

My poorly SBS-1 awaits and adaptor the same as yours...
