Two ATC agencies 'blacklist' 787 over position-data flaw

Most of the Boeing 787s delivered to date contain a software defect that, in at least five identified aircraft, have erroneously reported their location to controllers, prompting two air traffic management agencies to put the Dreamliner on a "blacklist" for certain services.

Although it denies the software defect creates a safety hazard, Boeing says a service bulletin with instructions for operators to correct the position reporting error will be released "imminently".

Fire fighters spray foam on wrong plane during engine emergency in China

The Boeing 737 with Flight CA1822 from Fuzhou in southeast Fujian Province to Beijing suddenly caught fire on its right engine at 8am when taxing on the runway as it was about to take off, the nation's flagship carrier said.

When the firefighters realised they picked the wrong plane and moved on to deal with the Air China aircraft with the heating engine, the Fuzhou Airlines aircraft was already all covered up in foams.

Cameron delays decision on new airport runway for London

Prime Minister David Cameron's government delayed a decision on whether to build a new runway at Heathrow Airport on Thursday, arguing that it needs more time to study the impact on air quality, noise and other environmental concerns.

Cameron had promised a firm decision by the end of this year on whether to choose Heathrow or Gatwick for airport expansion. Business leaders in Britain argue that the country needs more airport capacity in southeastern England to keep the country growing.

Heathrow had been selected by an independent panel over rival Gatwick, but in recent weeks, speculation has been building from Cameron's office that a decision would be delayed, in part because of environmental issues raised in a Parliamentary report earlier this month. Cameron's critics also suggested he wanted to delay the fiercely unpopular decision to boost the chances of the Conservative candidate Zac Goldsmith in London's mayoral race in May.

Global Advance Of ADS-B
ADS-B is rapidly becoming the surveillance standard for air traffic management worldwide

In the not-too-distant future, it will be possible to fly anywhere over the planet in an Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast environment affording benefits equally to flight crews, operators and air traffic controllers.

Not only are countries throughout the world adding ADS-B ground stations to ultimately replace radar for primary surveillance, others with limited or no radar capability are leapfrogging directly to ADS-B as a less-expensive alternative. However, there's real potential for global coverage absent any terrestrial network. This will materialize beginning this year with early launches of the second generation of the Iridium telecommunications satellite constellation on which ADS-B transponders will piggyback. With 66 satellites in inclined orbits, the system — conceived and managed by Iridium subsidiary Aireon LLC, and scheduled to go on line in 2018 — will assure full global coverage. Everywhere, with no voids.

But you read it here first.  And it looks like I'm still in trouble with the ADS-B Community.  :-[

From Bev at COAA

Hi,

PlanePlotter version 6.4.3.9 is now available for download by following the link on the PlanePlotter web site.
http://www.planeplotter.com

-----------
New in version 6.4.3.9

Info popup

The Info popup has been extended optionally to include the outside air temperature, the wind speed and direction, the expanded operator name and the expanded type. The operator and the type are extracted from the SQB file (where fitted) and the wind data is subject to it being polled by the radar site. You can turn the new options on an off using Options..Chart..Info popup.

Radar site identifier timeout

I have introduced a timeout for the radar site identifier such that the identifier will disappear if no site identification has been received for 30 seconds. Previously, if no new identifiers were received, the last identifier would persist for as long as the aircraft was current.

Port forwarding

Many validated Ground Stations have difficulty in keeping their port fowarding working. This release includes the ability for PlanePlotter to trigger the UPnP utility that is bundled with PP. It is hoped that users who have allowed their port forwarding to lapse but have UPnP enabled in their router, can now have their port forwarding configured by PP itself without user intervention. Of course, many routers do not have UPnP enabled but we are hoping that enough will do so, for this to bring more GSs into operation.

Auto screen grabs

The date-time group overlaid on automatically saved JPG images, now uses an opaque background unconditionally. This will avoid contrast problems that occurred with earlier versions.

Ground Station validation of low-traffic users

This is not a feature of PP itself but I have modified the server to measure more fairly the time tag validity for users with very low message rates. Previously, users with few messages would always fail the Ground Station time tag test. In many cases, the new server script may allow such potential GS to pass the tests that they previously failed. If you aspire to be a Ground Station but have been failing the time tag test, please try
again. The result may now be different.

Enjoy!
Regards
Bev

VIDEO Timelapse: Heathrow, the Europe's busiest airport

The two most prized strips of concrete in the world are the dual runways at Heathrow, Europe's busiest airport. On average an aircraft lands or departs every 45 seconds, in what is an intricate and well balanced operation. At the heart of it are the NATS air traffic controllers choreographing this daily dance from 258 feet above the aprons and taxiways.

No one else in the world moves as many aircraft off two runways and this stunning timelapse video captures the enormous scale of the operation and the incredible team work that helps make it all possible.

FAA Announces Small UAS Registration Rule: Registration free for the first 30 days

FAA to require most drones to be registered and marked.

FAA Drone Rule Released

The FAA's new rule that will require drone users to register their aircraft was released today, and FAA officials told reporters this morning they're hopeful the word will get out and users will comply.

"Unmanned aircraft operators are aviators," said Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, on a conference call.

"And with that title comes a great deal of responsibility."

He added: "My message to unmanned aircraft operators is pretty simple: It is in your best interest to register early....

This is one step we're taking, but it's not the only step the government will take when it comes to the safe integration of these technologies.

We reserve the right to ratchet up or down depending on circumstances as they continue to evolve." The rule applies to all drones weighing between 0.55 and 55 pounds.

Volocopter VC200 : first easy-to-fly helicopter takes off

Safely piloting a helicopter requires a very high degree of piloting skill. Up until now, flying a helicopter has been one of the ultimate challenges in the aviation world.

Karlsruhe-based company e-volo GmbH recently finished its first easy-to-fly helicopter, the 2-seater Volocopter VC200, and performed test flights in the open.

In the process, the company's CEO Alex Zosel remotely flew the Volocopter for the first time – single-handed and only with a joystick. Zosel himself is extremely impressed by how easily and intuitively the VC200 is operated.

Flexjet Outlines How Supersonic AS2s Will Be Integrated

Like its Gulfstream G650s that will enter service next year, Flexjet's supersonic Aerion AS2s—slated for delivery starting in 2023—will be part of the fractional provider's Global Access program, Flexjet chairman and parent company Directional Aviation Capital principal Kenn Ricci told AIN. This means that Flexjet will not be selling shares in either of these long-range aircraft.

Instead, existing Flexjet share owners would pay an additional monthly fee to get access to the G650 and AS2, in addition to hourly occupied charges. The company said these hourly charges will be "dynamic," with members paying lower rates for the hours spent in long-range cruise.

Upload Only setting - a warning

Users who share their data with other servers please take note.

If you select Upload Only, the server is prohibited from sending any data to you. That includes sending you the correct share code - so if you have Upload Only selected, you might be sending out the wrong share code with your data.

That is not a problem for the PlanePlotter network as you are identified in other ways but any third party systems will receive the wrong share code from you and that will confuse their administration of their data suppliers.

Several times recently, I have been asked by third party systems about two users with, apparently, the same share code. In every case, one of the users was uploading the wrong share code because they had Upload Only set and the PP server was unable to send the correct share code.

If you share your data with other services, please - from time to time - enable two way sharing (download as well as upload - ie two arrows showing on the Share button) - so that the server can send you the correct share code. You only need to enable it for a minute or two (a share cycle) and then, if you wish, you can restore Upload Only.

Thank you.
