New generation 'doomsday' airborne command post to enter service in Russia

Russia's defense industry has completed tests of a new flying command center capable of maintaining full control over the country's armed forces in the event of a global disaster or nuclear war. Russia and the US are the only two nations to possess a command center of this kind.
The airborne strategic command center aboard an Ilyushin Il-80 aircraft, a modification of the Il-86 wide-body jet airliner, has successfully completed testing and will be ready for operations by the end of 2015, Russia's United Instrument Manufacturing Corporation (UIMC) said.

The operational deployment of the airborne center is indispensable in situations when there is an absence of ground infrastructure, and in conditions where communications from ground facilities have been disrupted.

Does no one else post on their forum ?

Sometimes.  Usually new members seeking advice which they never receive.

That's why someone suggested it be renamed "Brian's Blog".  It's definitely not a "Forum".

Virgin Galactic to use Boeing 747 as launch pad for spaceship

Virgin Galactic, a commercial spaceflight company founded by Richard Branson, has unveiled an old Virgin Atlantic jumbo jetliner, Boeing 747- 400, which will be used as a launch pad for hurling satellites into space.

The aircraft, acquired from the company's airline wing, will act as a platform for Virgin Galactic's LauncherOne small satellite launch service.

The launch system is expected to go operational by 2018.

Pilot Complaints Cite Christmas Light Displays

At least two pilots in the last week have lodged complaints about laser light in the cockpit that was traced back to a Christmas light display, raising concerns about the popular displays, according to media reports. Authorities found the source of laser light that affected a mail pilot near Mason County Airport in western Michigan last week was a home display set up outdoors and aimed at the side of a barn. The light reflected into the sky directly across the airplane's flight path, authorities said. In Dallas, an American Airlines 737 crew reported a laser strike at 13,000 feet that also was traced to a holiday display.

The ADS-B Waiting Game

When should you upgrade your airplane for ADS-B?

So let me guess. You still haven't equipped your airplane for ADS-B. With the calendar about to flip from 2015 to 2016 – and with the FAA mandate still stubbornly set for Jan. 1, 2020 – you're starting to feel a little squeamish. You know you should install mandate-compliant ADS-B gear (including a WAAS GPS position source and antenna if you don't have one already) but you're reluctant to act. What if the mandate is delayed? What if a better, cheaper option comes along?

If you've already upgraded your airplane for ADS-B, congratulations. Your worries are behind you, and you're probably already enjoying some of the benefits of ADS-B, such as traffic and weather data if you also have an ADS-B In solution.
