Used FlightAware to make up college football coaching rumors before everyone else could

Guess what, college football bigwigs. Your secret is out. Thanks to FlightAware, we know who you're talking to, and we're telling the world.

The college football coaching carousel is in full swing, and that can only mean one thing: it's FlightAware season.

Athletic directors and coaching prospects are jetting around the nation, meeting with each other to set up the next big deal that will set the football world on fire. They used to be able to do this surreptitiously, but thanks to FlightAware, it's not so secret anymore.

Over the years, the flight-tracking website has allowed college football fans to catch Auburn interviewing head coaches at Arkansas State, Boise State and TCU, but it's also caused reporters to hang out at airports in entirely wrong cities.

USN moves to modify Super Hornet for Blue Angels role

The US Navy has started a process to replace the Blue Angels demonstration team's aircraft with a squadron of Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornets.

Boeing will receive a contract to draw up the engineering plans needed to convert the single-seat Super Hornet into a configuration specific to the Blue Angels role, the navy said in a 3 December acquisition notice.

The engineering work will support engineering change proposal 6480, which is entitled, "Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron (Blue Angels) Super Hornet Conversion", the acquisition document shows.

Malaysia Airports seeks owner of three Boeing 747s abandoned at KLIA

Tuesday, 8 December 2015

Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), the country's main airport operator, is seeking the owner of three unclaimed planes left at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

In a notice in The Star's classifieds section on Monday, Malaysia Airports (Sepang) Sdn Bhd, which manages KLIA, gave the unknown owner of three Boeing 747-200F aircraft 14 days to collect his planes.

"If you fail to collect the aircraft within 14 days of the date of this notice, we reserve the right to sell or otherwise dispose of the aircraft," the notice read, adding that the money raised would be used to offset any expenses and debts due.

The owner was being sought under the Civil Aviation Regulations 1996 and could be subjected to charges by Malaysia Airports (Sepang), presumably for storing the three planes at the international airport, although the notice does not specify how much.

Malaysian Airlines completely shut down the Cargo Business when it declared bankrupted - for more than 10 years the Airline's Union were against all kinds of re-structuring to save the MAS.

TF-ARN could be one of the "forgotten" plane when the Cargo Business closed down.

HondaJet Wins FAA Certification

Honda Aircraft's light jet won certification from the FAA this week, making the formal announcement Wednesday at the company's Greensboro, N.C., plant.

Honda's long-anticipated announcement comes after more than 18 years of development for the twin jet, which completed certification flight tests in November.

The aircraft, known officially as the HA-420, is expected to develop into a series of larger jets featuring Honda's wing pylon design and versions of the HF120 engines.

Honda's first clean-sheet aircraft design was "an unprecedented challenge" for the company, CEO Michimasa Fujino said.

Heathrow expansion: Plane spotters take 'blind test'

9 December 2015

The decision is still pending on whether a new runway will be built at Heathrow or Gatwick to try to meet the UK's air capacity needs.

But many people living near airports fear any expansion would make the noise from landing and take-offs worse. The airline industry argues noise can be minimised with modern aircraft design.

In a very unscientific study, video journalist Dougal Shaw visited a spot popular with plane spotters near Heathrow, to see how distinctive plane noise can be.

He asked Keith Blackham, Brian Richards and Peter Harding to guess what make and model of planes were landing behind them, without seeing them.

Another proxy muddle

I am seeing several users reporting the same IP address. This time, the IP address belongs to a BT proxy.

I do not know yet whether the DNS 8.8.8.8 fix that solved the Virgin Media problem, will solve this problem with BT too, but this is a "heads up".

If you are with BT and you see more than one share code when you check your GS status, that may be the reason.

USA's three biggest airlines now ban hoverboards

Hoverboards may be gaining popularity as Christmas presents this year, but they're falling out of favor with an increasing number of big airlines.

American, Delta and United all announced on Thursday that they would no longer allow the devices on their planes.

"As cool as they are, there's one big problem: they are not safe to transport on an airplane," Alaska Airlines, which moved to ban hoverboads last week, explained Thursday via its corporate blog.

"Poorly labeled, powerful lithium-ion batteries powering hoverboards are the issue," Delta added in its own statement. "Delta reviewed hoverboard product specifications and found that manufacturers do not consistently provide detail about the size or power of their lithium-ion batteries"

Early Technology Adopter UPS Disconnects ADS-B 'In' Avionics

Fifteen years after it helped to introduce the technology, UPS is removing traffic information displays from its Boeing 757 and 767 flight decks because the equipment is obsolete and there is no Federal Aviation Administration mandate to use it, the cargo carrier said. It expects to remove the automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) "In" capability by next spring.
