As temperatures hover at a chilly 8C, the first of thousands of people expected to leave the country over the weekend have begun arriving at airports.

Managers at Glasgow Airport said that they expected 90,000 people to have passed through its doors between today and Monday.

Edinburgh Airport said it expected around 70,000 passengers.

The Canary Islands, Spain, Portugal and Dubai are among the favoured destinations and thousands are also expected to take city breaks, with London and Amsterdam very popular.

The most sought after long-haul destinations are New York, Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Association of British Travel Agents spokesman Sean Tipton said: "Bookings are slightly up on last year. Spain is popular, plus Turkey and North Africa."
